Midrand – A newly revamped Kyalami Grand Prix racetrack has been awarded a Grade 2 racetrack certification by the Federation International de l’Automobile (FIA).
The brand new 4.522km Grand Prix circuit conforms to stringent international safety and quality standards and is the only current motor racing facility on the African continent to have been bestowed the prestigious accreditation.
Formula One safety delegate, Charlie Whiting, was quoted in his track report as saying that he didn't have to think twice about the certification.
"The track looked amazing and the attention to detail during the total refurbishment is second to none. I therefore have no hesitation in recommending that a Grade 2 circuit licence is issued for the track."
Along with the new upgrades, the new Kyalami International Convention Centre and pits complex has also been completed.
In keeping with the revived legacy for Kyalami, various areas within this expansive building have been named after legendary racing drivers, all of whom enjoyed racing great success at Kyalami.
The 2 770m² area, connected to the upper parking via a new bridge, with its large, flexible exhibition space will be known as the Jody Scheckter Paddock Club. Scheckter was the 1979 Formula One World Drivers' Champion.
Two boardrooms were named after Belgian Jacky Ickx and Dave Charlton (South African Formula One Champion). Four adjacent conference rooms have been named after British nationals Sir Jackie Stewart, Nigel Mansell (CBE), Frenchman Alain Prost and three time F1 World Champion, Niki Lauda (Austria) respectively.
Further upgrades that have been completed include the 18 000m² dynamic driver training area, covered with low-friction asphalt as well as the 1.1km dynamic handling circuit.
From October 21-23 the track will host the Motorsport Festival.
