VILLUPURAM: Tension gripped Villupuram town in Tamil Nadu after an unidentified gang hacked local DMK functionary C Selvaraj to death on Wednesday morning.
Selvaraj (43), who was party’s Villupuram town secretary, left home in the morning for a walk. He was found dead in north railway colony with deep cut injuries in his head.
Passersby alerted the Villupuram town police.
The Police recovered the body and sent it to the Mundiyampakkam Government Medical College Hospital for postmortem.
Initial inquiries revealed that a five-member gang, which had been monitoring his movement for the past couple of days, intercepted him during his morning walk.
When three of them began a conversation with Selvaraj, the two others attacked him with sharp weapons from behind inflicting deep cut injuries at the back of his head. Selvaraj succumbed to the injuries on the spot.
A close aide of former DMK minister and current MLA K Ponmudi, Selvaraj was involved in a bitter rivalry between two dominant castes to establish their supremacy within the party’s Villupuram unit.
It might be recalled that N Muthamizhselvam alias Pathar Selvam, wanted by police in several cases including murders, was hacked to death by a gang led by K Arivazhagan. Police suspect that Selvaraj’s murder might have links with the murder of Selvam.
