The accident came to police notice when the victim was unable to pay the hospital and they called the cops.

The Sewree police have arrest ed a doctor and a driver for covering up a road accident.

The accident, which took place on September 1, only came to the police's notice when the victim was unable to pay his hospital bills, the perpetrator was unreachable, and the nursing home called the police.

According to the police, the accident took place when 22-year-old Mohammad Sayyed, a bike mechanic, was standing by the side of BPT road in Sewree and a speeding Toyota Corolla rammed into him. As a crowd gathered around him, the driver Mohammad Shaikh, halted a taxi and took up the responsibility of getting Sayyed to the hospital.

“He drove me to Lalbaug and we changed into another taxi. Then we came to Dongri, where he took me to a dispensary. The doctor there, said that my injuries were too severe and that I should be taken to a hospital," said Sayyed, who suffered a severe fracture to his right leg and also a foot injury, requiring multiple stitch es. After driving him around for over four hours, Shaikh took him to the Dawood Nursing Home in Mumbai Central, where the former personally knew Dr Sohail Shaikh.

“The driver got some money from his employer and paid enough to cover three days of hospitalization.Later, when the victim's family insisted on further treatment, the driver could not be reached and the nursing home called the police," said senior police inspector S Nagwe, He added that when the police went to the nursing home, Dr Shaikh tried to sidetrack them, as he hadn't filed Sayyed's medical papers.

“We shifted him to the Habib Nursing home in Dongri, where he was operated upon for his fracture. The money for the surgery was given by the driver's employer," said Sayyed's brother-in-law, Javed Khan.He added that even if they had paid for treatment, it was not right that the driver had travelled around with Sayyed for four hours, instead of taking him to a good hospital immediately.

The police arrested the doctor under section 212 (harbouring an offender, with the intention of screening him from legal punishment) and the driver under section 279 (rash or negligent driving), among other sections of the Indian Penal Code. Dr Shaikh has been released on bail, while Mohammad Shaikh is still in police custody.
