Soccer player knocked unconscious, stayed in match
While the NFL is under justifiable scrutiny for its failure to enforce its concussion protocol, UEFA may need to reevaluate its own policy on concussions.
During Tuesday's Champions League group stage match between Benfica and Besiktas, Benfica's Alex Grimaldo was knocked out cold after taking a brutal volley to the face from point-blank range. Ricardo Quaresma, whose volley was blocked by Grimaldo, tried to get Grimaldo to respond to no avail.
Medical staff treated to Grimaldo's injury and eventually ruled that it was OK for him to stay in the game. Really.
Keep in mind that this RPP report is translated, but yikes:
With proper care doctors, the scare did not pass over and Alex Grimaldo could play the remainder of the match against Besiktas team.
According to UEFA's concussion policy, medical staff have three minutes to evaluate a player for a concussion.
