The government would set up two sewage treatment plants (STPs) in the district to make the Saraswati river pollution free.

This was decided in a meeting held here today to review the ongoing revival work of the Saraswati river.

The meeting was attended by Vijayendra Kumar, Chief Executive Officer, Haryana Saraswati Heritage Development Board, Prashant Bhardwaj, Deputy Chairman, Darshan Lal Jain, president, Saraswati Nadi Shodh Sansthan, Deputy Commissioner SS Phulia, Deputy Conservator of Forest, Yamunanagar Division, Niveditha Bojarajan, Jagadhri SDM Prem Chand, Bilaspur SDM Naveen Ahuja, City Magistrate Bharat Bhushan Kaushik, DDPO Gagandeep Singh and sarpanches of several villages.

Sources said that the sewage treatment plants would be set up Bilaspur and Saraswati Nagar of the district as waste of both the towns was being discharged into the river.

Vijayendra also asked officers of the local administration to rope in sarpanches of the villages situated close to the river to stop discharge of sewage into the river.

The sources said that the meeting also decided to start demarcation of land in Chhallaur, Rampur Kamboyan and Rampur Hediyan villages for a reservoir which would come up on 300 acres to store floodwater of Som, Pathrala and other rivers to feed the Saraswati throughout the year. The reservoir would prove beneficial for the residents of several villages as the floodwater of the rivers used to wreak havoc in the area every year. Besides, it was also decided to develop tourist sites in the area on priority basis to attract national and international tourists.
