BHOPAL: Passengers on the New Delhi-Habibganj Jan Shatabdi Express had a narrow escape on Monday when the axle of their coach got overheated.
The overheating of the axle could have had dangerous consequences had it not been detected in time, a railway official said. By the time the train was given the greenlight, it was two hours late.
"The driver and train attendants informed us at 12.45pm that there was a technical snag in coach C14.
The technical experts on board examined the problem and reported that we needed to detach the coach if the train has to move. The axle was heated to such extent that it would have created a hazardous situation," said Brajendra Kumar, senior divisional commercial manager, Bhopal division. "Since passengers' safety was at stake, we shifted them to a vacant coach and detached C-14. This took two hours," added Kumar.
This potentially hazardous glitch in one of the most important trains to Bhopal triggered a scare at Bhopal Railway station and for railway manager Pradeep Singh.
Pritish Singh, who had come to receive a relative from Gwalior on the same train, was very tense. "There is no announcement of delay yet. The notice board is still showing 'right time', but my brother-in-law texted me about the situation there. We don't know what to do," he said. When the train finally pulled into the station at 4pm, relief was clear on the faces of passengers and relatives. "I kept my fingers crossed throughout the journey from
Bina to Bhopal. This was a horrible experience on Shatabdi, which we consider one of the best trains,' said Tina Bajpayee, a passenger.
"Such incidents are not reported regularly, but this was second in the past eight days. A short circuit in fan was reported last week," said Prabhat Kashyap, passenger from Bhopal.
