Chennai: A police head constable fell down from the second floor of a multi-storey building in Nungambakkam while chasing a ganja smuggler on Monday morning.
Police said Mohan, attached to Nungambakkam police station, was on a patrol with his colleague, Thangapandian, when the incident took place.
The peddler, 'Ganja' Velu, a habitual offender, who was involved in a series of ganja smuggling cases was on the run for a couple of months.
Velu had at least five cases registered against him.
While patrolling on his bike, Mohan noticed Velu sitting on pavement. He parked his bike and went to catch him but in vain.
One of Velu's friends who noticed Mohan approaching alerted him helping him to escape.
However, Mohan continued to chase him through narrow streets in the area.
While fleeing, Velu went inside a building and moved to the terrace.
Mohan also went in and while chasing Velu he fell from the second floor suffering multiple injuries on his legs.
Locals rushed Mohan to Government Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital where his condition was said to be stable.
Nungambakkam police have registered a case and have launched a hunt for Velu who is still at large.
