Compact mag stripe, smart card, contactless reader

Product: UniPay III
Company: International Technologies and Systems Corp.

Cypress, Calif.-based International Technologies and Systems Corp. – doing business as ID TECH, a global technology and manufacturing firm founded in 1985 – added UniPay III to its line of mobile payment card readers. Designed to connect to the audio ports of smart devices, UniPay III combines magnetic stripe, EMV (Europay, Mastercard and Visa) and contactless readers inside a small footprint.

International Technologies and Sytems Corp.

UniPay III is the newest and smallest member of ID TECH's audio jack family of mobile card readers; its universal audio jack interface is compatible with most mobile tablets and smart phones, the company stated. Building on the success of dual card-reading UniPay 1.5, the triple-track solution adds near field communication (NFC) technology to facilitate mobile wallet schemes and other emerging applications.

"NFC is popular in Europe and Asia, and the U.S. market is beginning to embrace chip technology, making this a perfect time to introduce the next wave of mobile readers to merchants," said Chao Yin, Product Manager, Mobile Payment Devices at ID TECH. "Contactless certifications can be costly and time consuming; our fully certified ViVOpay application is widely used around the world in a variety of payment and nonpayment applications."

Efficient design, certifications

UniPay III supports most mobile wallet and contactless payment schemes, including Android Pay, Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, Mastercard PayPass, Visa VCPS, American Express ExpressPay and Discover D-PAS. The company noted that its efficient design helps extend the battery life of both the UniPay III and connected host devices by minimizing energy consumption. The USB port can be used for charging or communicating with a PC or Android USB device.

ID TECH said UniPay III is contact and contactless EMV Level 1 and Level 2 approved and uses DUKPT key management with Triple DES and AES encryption to fully encrypt mag stripe, smart card, and contactless payment transactions at card entry and securely transmit them to the host device.

Software developers can use the ID TECH Universal SDK to adapt the UniPay III in a variety of cross-platform, cross-technology solutions. Its EMV L2 kernel can simplify integration and certification of EMV in mobile environments and settings.

Versatile uses

According to the company, UniPay III's small footprint and versatile design make it broadly adaptable to numerous retail and hospitality environments and applications, including tabletop applications that support mobile payment schemes and high-volume, low-value theatrical and sporting venues.

"At sports stadiums where tens of thousands of people gather and rush to the food courts during breaks, shaving a few seconds off a transaction can make a huge difference," Yin stated. "Contactless transactions take an average of one to two seconds to process, compared to five- to 10-second magnetic stripe, and 15- to 20-second contact EMV transactions, which can boost traffic at concession stands during high peak intermission times."

Yin, who divides his time among ID TECH's California, China and Taiwan offices, has seen growing interest around the world in the self-serve and unattended space, as manufacturers increasingly integrate contactless and payment card readers into kiosks and vending machines. He expects this trend to continue.

"UniPay III is a timely solution," he said. "There's a huge market for mobile readers, and with time and education, more consumers and merchants will adopt mobile technology. From a product manager perspective, there is broad potential for UniPay in many value-added solutions, beyond just payment transactions, such as loyalty, membership programs and access control."
