Qurbaani qurbaani!

Aye mere watan ke logon… zara yaad karo qurbaani (1963)

Music: C Ramchandra

Singer: Lata Mangeshkar

This iconic song, which was first sung by Lata Mangeshkar 50 years ago, brought tears to the eyes of the then Prime Minister Pandi Jawaharlal Nehru. It was a tribute to the soldiers who had sacrificed their lives during the Sino-Indian war and has achieved cult status ever since.

Palat meri jaan tere qurbaan

Film: Aan Milo Sajna (1970)

Music: Laxmikant Pyarelal

Singer: Asha Bhosle

It’s rare in our films to encounter the female gaze. Here not only is the heroine openly ogling the hero, she’s man-teasing him in the best tradition of our leading men and swears she’s fallen head over heels for him and is ready to sacrifice anything for him. Watch the song for Asha Parekh’s brash act and Rajesh Khann’s ‘coyness’.

Jaanu meri jaan, main tere qurbaan

Film: Shaan (1980)

Music: RD Burman

Singers: Mohammed Rafi, Asha Bhosle, Kishore Kumar and Usha Mangeshkar

It’s a fun song shot on Amitabh Bachchan, Shashi Kapoor, Parveen Babi and Bindiya Goswami. The film has the boys hijacking a BEST bus in order to impress the girls. They are trying to demonstrate they can go to any length to prove their love.

Qurbaani qurbaani qurbaani, Allah ko pyari hai qurbaani

Film: Qurbaani (1980)

Music: Kalyanji-Anandji

Singers: Kishore Kumar, Anwar, Aziz Nazan

Feroz Khan and Vinod Khanna dressed as Pathans and playing with swords while proclaiming undying friendship towards each other – there isn’t a better representation of macho bromance in our films than this song. Real men, real swords, real emotions… what else can we care for?

Main tujhpe kurbaan

Film:  Kurbaan (1991)

Music: Anand-Milind

Singer: Mohammed Aziz

There is no stronger bond than a brothers love for his sister and vice versa. In the present song, Sunil Dutt’s sister is about to get married and he’s so happy seeing her as a bride that he’s ready to sacrifice anything for it. It’s a song that showcases true sibling love and shouldn’t be missed out.

Kurbaan hua

Kurbaan (2009)

Music: Salim-Sulaiman

Singer: Vishal Dadlani

Saif Ali Khan featured in the futuristic picturisation of this song where he’s shown to be someone who is ready to sacrifice everything for the sake of love. Vishal Dadlani killed it in his vocals and the fantastic imagery added to its charm.
