Mariano Rajoy confirmed that four people died in the accident and pointed out that the priority at this time is to "attend to the injured as soon as possible" so that they can return home.

He also declared that he hopes the railway service can be re-established soon and that the investigation opened in court number 2 of O Porriño and the Railway Accident Investigation Committee of the Ministry of Public Works can determine "exactly what happened and the causes of the accident".

The President of the Government visited the Advanced Command Post in O Porriño to ask after the victims and passed on the condolences, the solidarity and the support of the government to those affected and their families.

He also thanked all the healthcare personnel for the speed with which they attended the victims and evacuated them to hospital. "I was told that there are only 12 people in hospital, although it is likely that others may be taken there, although, in principle, no-one has life-threatening injuries", declared the President of the Government.
