KANPUR: Remember the Sridevi-starrer 'Nagina' and the earlier Reena Roy-starrer 'Nagin' based on the ages-old myth about cobra revenge? There seems to be a similar story being played out in real life in Mainpuri's Usnidha village, where a family is living in constant fear after losing two of its members in three days. The killer on the prowl is a cobra snake.
On August 31, the snake bit 35-year-old Ravi, who died.
In a strange coincidence, while the family members were performing death rituals on the third day after his last rites, his wife Seema (28) too was bitten by the same large cobra. She also died while undergoing treatment at a local hospital.
Since both husband and wife are from one family, the superstitious family and locals believe that the snake is on a revenge spree. To ward off any more such tragic incidents, the villagers are performing a 'bhajan-kirtan' and getting snake charmers to cast spells and ward off evil spirits. The family, besides other villagers in Usnidha, are living in fear of the deadly reptile that has been still living in the house of the dead couple. Panic-stricken family members have been tying their pets outside the houses of their neighbours and have sent the couple's two children to the house of their maternal grandparents.
Speaking to TOI, the villagers said Ravi's siblings and elderly mother were staying at the house of their neighbours.
"If it can do that to the husband-wife duo, imagine what it can do to us. That is our main fear. We have to be very careful and cannot leave the others on their own. Our worst fear is for the children of the couple. We have sent them to their maternal grandparents place," said Neeraj, a cousin of deceased Ravi.
The villagers thereafter called in the forest department and district officials for help, and a 'tehsildar' was sent to the spot.
