I feel my face isn't as expressive as my voice: Sunitha
I've always thought that I wasn't cut out for acting and although I often got offers to act in feature films I never took them up,' says Sunitha, who's visibly nervous about the prospect of playing an aspiring singer in the upcoming short directed by debutante Chaitanya. 'I
play an independent woman, Pravallika, who is a journalist by profession and loves singing,' says Sunitha adding, 'The film revolves around the everyday issues women face at their workplaces.
It is a very thought-provoking concept.' Talking about the film, Raagam she says, 'I related with the story so much that I couldn't say no. Besides, the movie was conceptualised by a woman. There are barely a handful of women technicians in the industry that I felt obliged to give Chaitanya a chance. Moreover, she was adamant that it had to be me or she would not make the film at all.'
A single mother and a successful singer, Sunitha in a recent interview shared her struggles in the industry and life alike. And the experience of that struggle reflects in her interpretation of the role. 'In the field that I am in, you have to deal with a lot of scrutiny and judgement. There are times you have to endure something emotionally draining and yet put up a smile for the world. This is the case in any profession that a woman steps into. And the movie deals with just that. That's probably why I have been able to pull off the scenes in single takes. It's more or less the story of my life,' says the singer who believes she has a lot of catching up to do when it comes to acting.
Despite the role being close to her personality, Sunitha admits, she isn't exactly cut out to act. 'Although I have dubbed for a lot of films acting is a whole different balllgame. I have to match my voice to my expressions now,' she exclaims adding, 'My director says I'm a natural but I feel my face isn't as expressive as my voice. So, that's the pressure right now,' she says as she signs off.
