Gujarat: Man beaten to death over Rs 10 lakh extortion in Bhavnagar

A man was murdered by a group of eight persons for allegedly refusing to accede to their demand of Rs 10 lakh “extortion money” in Bhavnagar town. The CCTV footage shows that the victim was chased and beaten to death.

According to a complaint lodged by Irfan Makwana, the assailants had demanded an extortion sum of Rs 10 lakh from his brother Rafiq Makwana or transfer his vegetable shop to their names.

Police said that Makwana was first attacked at his vegetable shop near Amba Chowk in the town and when he fled, the assailants, armed with swords and wooden sticks, chased him down.

Makwana is seen in the video grab being beaten up by the accused persons. Police said that he died on the spot. Dipanker Trivedi, Superintendent of Police, Bhavnagar, said that the case had been cracked and the accused will be arrested soon. He said that the motive behind the murder was extortion and all the eight people have been booked for murder and conspiracy, among other charges.

According to police, six persons have been named in the FIR. They include: Sandeep Bharatbhai, Hardik Uluwa, Sajid, Jitubhai Rabari, Raja Majikwala and Taku. They said that two others were being identified. The case has been handed over to local crime branch for further investigation.

“We have picked up several people connected to the accused. We hope to arrest all accused by Sunday afternoon,” said a police officer. He added that the CCTV footage was being examined to confirm the identity of the accused.
