Four try to swindle bank of 99 crore, arrested
Mumbai: The Worli police on Thursday detained four persons including a Mumbai businessman from a private bank’s branch. The four accused had come to check if Rs 99 crore was transferred to an account as per a fake transaction entry made by fifth accused, who was an employee in the bank’s Patiala branch.
The bank manager got suspicious and checked the transaction. He found that the entry had been made at the bank’s Patiala branch.
The manager immediately contacted the Patiala branch officials, who clarified that the entry was fake and was made by an employee.
The Mumbai branch manager called up the police which arrived in minutes and detained four accused.
A police officer said that an FIR of cheating was registered with the Patiala police which came to Mumbai and took the accused with it on transit remand. “Among the accused two were from Madhya Pradesh, one from Aurangabad, one from Mumbai and one employee of the bank in Patiala,” said an official.
The accused were in touch with each other and planned to go ahead with a business project. They planned that their accomplice in the bank in Patiala would make a fake entry of Rs99 crore being deposited in cash in one account, once the bank transfers the money according to the entry, they would move Rs56 crore to another account. On Thursday, the account holder was informed to check if the money has been credit to his account. He went to the bank to verify the amount and the financial transaction. This is when the bank manager got suspicious and called up the police,” added the police officer.
Meanwhile, the bank employee in Patiala was also detained and police was informed there. All the transactions were cancelled and the fake entries have been taken on record by the police as evidence. “The Patiala police took custody of the accused and took all of them to Patiala. They are probing the case,” said an officer in Mumbai.
