HYDERABAD: A two-judge Bench of Supreme Court comprising Justice Dipak Misra and Justice N Nagappa on Thursday rejected the special leave petitions of Medical Council of India and directed that counselling be done to fill up vacant seats in government medical colleges at the post-graduate level within two weeks.
Such counselling, however, would be applicable only for students who have not been admitted so far. This would directly affect seats in the states of AP, Telangana and Delhi universities.
A Division Bench of the High Court had directed counselling even after the cut-off date. Counsel K V Simhadri appearing for petitioners Dr Apoorva and others pleaded that the order of the High Court was justified in view of waste of public money if the seats were not filled up.
The Bench rejected the arguments of VVS Rao who appeared for the In-Service Doctors. Senior counsel Prashant Bhushan appeared for Delhi students and K V Simhadri for Hyderabad students
