Girl on top

IN the ceaseless war between Deepika Padukone, Priyanka Chopra and perhaps Katrina Kaif, Kangana Ranaut seems to be having the last, albeit surreptitious, giggle. The muchtouted ‘Queen’ of the film world remains so, even years after the film by the same name shot her to super-stardom. We have it from our sound sources that Ranaut is offered almost every big film that is being written, and madam is refusing them by the busloads. Atta girl! Her reasons are rather feminist, so she has a cheer from us as well. She won’t do a film if the male lead has the title role, or if he is onscreen for even a minute longer than her. She insists on authorbacked titles. She will also refuse a film if the male lead is paid more than her.

So, Ranaut has refused almost every film with Akshay Kumar that was offered to her (and it seems she has been offered almost every film he has starred in lately, including Airlift and Rustom). She refused Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Sultan with Salman Khan (insiders swear she told the makers “there can’t be two sultans in the film”). She also refused the Sanjay Dutt biopic with Ranbir Kapoor where she would essay the role of Dutt’s wife Maanyata.

In fact, the film’s director, Raju Hirani, then offered her another heroine-centred film. And after being unable to come on board Aanand L Rai’s next film opposite Shah Rukh Khan (Rai is known to discuss all his scripts with his Tanu Weds Manu-star), he’s offered her a later film called Heer. Meryl Streep who?

Padamsee sets a new record

THE SaffronArt auction in Delhi on Thursday set a new record for modernist Akbar Padamsee. His Greek Landscape, whose provenance can be traced to Krishen Khanna, sold for Rs 19.19 crore. The imagined cityscape painted in a palette of varying intensities of grey, attracted particular attention for its revolutionary approach and monumental scale, when it was first exhibited at the Jehangir Art Gallery.

Padamsee garnered critical acclaim from leading art critics of the time, and found admiration among his contemporaries. The other highlight of the evening was V S Gaitonde’s Untitled (1970), an oil on canvas that fetched Rs 10.12 crore.

Love strains

THE utterly elegant Elsie Nanji keeps to herself and her close circle of friends shuttling between her superb design firm and her Alibaug bungalow. But who can forget her immense contributions to the world of advertising— her campaigns for Lakme and Garden saris are still memorable, while Madhu Sapre and Milind Soman playing Adam and Eve for a shoe brand is the stuff of legend. Nanji’s young daughter Aria is turning out to be a rather cultural girl herself. In tune with her name, Aria is quite the songstress. She performs at local clubs and festivals whenever she is in Mumbai. Her partner is an independent musician called Clayton Hogermeer. And rumour has it the two singers are also happily dating. Cute.

Drink now, eat later

JUHU lad and the rumoured ex of Sushmita Sen, Imttiaz Khatri, celebrated his birthday at a Parel fivestar over the weekend. Quite the affable host, his party was filled with the kind of peeps who bring their security guards with them—politicians and actors. Among his guests were Shraddha Kapoor, Sushant Singh Rajput, Athiya Shetty, Sooraj Pancholi and Krishna Shroff. We hear that topnotch booze flowed till dawn, but the dinner was limited to kheema pao and biryani. Why? Because that’s the meal one looks for post a guzzled stomach.

Tailpiece

THE chips are down for most mega production houses, but the latest release of this fantasy film has rung the death knell for this old house. So devastated is this company that it is planning to shut down its films division in entirety. The owners—in a desperate measure—are trying every trick in the book to save themselves. Last we heard they had taken the horoscope of every person in their top management to their local pandit for a dekko. Guess these are times when your curriculum vitae must list not only your qualifications but also the time of your birth.
