Here are three facts:
- We’re heading into the semi-finals of the U.S. Open today.
- Today is Thursday.
- People have been known to throw things back on Thursdays with a little social media gimmick called a #TBT.
We therefore have the perfect confluence of reasons to relive Andy Roddick’s incredible press conference after Roger Federer absolutely mopped the court with him in the semi-finals 2007 Australian Open, 6-4, 6-0, 6-2. Roddick showed up to the press conference afterwards with the best dark sense of humor one could expect. This part is particularly amazing:
Reporter: “What was it like, just being there at the end of that?”
Roddick: “It was miserable. It was terrible. Um, but besides that it was fun.”
People often complain that tennis has gotten too prescribed and that players are too buttoned up. That argument didn’t totally hold water on Wednesday night when Murray lost his match against Kei Nishikori and also his cool on the court during the marathon, five-set battle. And Nick Kyrgios has certainly brought a bit of liveliness (if you want to be generous about it) to the sport.
But it’s generally true that tennis has gotten more staid, and so whenever we have a chance to watch players either flame out on the court or tell it like it is in a press conference, it feels like a little treat. Even if that treat took place in 2007.
