Happy Birthday Asha Bhosle!

On the occasion of Asha tai's 83rd birthday, we select some of her hit duets with Kishore Kumar over the years

Piya piya piya mora jiya pukare

Film : Baap Re Baap (1955)

Singers : Asha Bhosle, Kishore Kumar

Music: OP Nayyar

The film was a musical comedy starring Kishore Kumar and Chand Usmani and revolved around Kishore having a set of overprotective parents. This is the song where his father is convinced about his son finding the right match and the joy exhibited by Usmani on screen is felt through Asha’s bouncy rendition.

Chhod do aanchal zamana kya kahega

Paying Guest (1956)
Singers : Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhosle

Music: SD Burman

Filmed on Dev Anand and Nutan, this has to be one of the best courtship songs ever and the tone of some harmless flirting has been caught expertly by Asha and Kishore.

Haal kaisa hai janab ka

Film : Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi (1958)

Singers : Asha Bhosle, Kishore Kumar

Music : S.D.Burman

The mood was naughty, the song a sort of a dialogue between the lovers and both Asha Bhosle and Kishore Kumar caught the nuances expertly. You can't help but smile listening to the song.

Dooriyan Nazdikiyan Ban Gayi

Film: Duniya (1968)

Singers : Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhosle

Music: Shankar Jaikishan

Dev Anand and Vyajanthimala cavort as coy lovers in this song about saying it all without saying much. The song sounds as fresh to this day as it was then.

O sathi chal

Film: Seeta Aur Geeta (1972)

Singers : Asha Bhosle, Kishore Kumar

Music : RD Burman

It was picturised on Sanjeev Kumar and Hema Malini doing roller skating on open roads and the highlight of the song was the illusion created by the singers of a couple out skating. You get a sense of adventure, of outdoors listening to the song.

Khullam khulla pyar karenge

Film : Khel Khel Mein (1975)

Singers : Asha Bhosle, Kishore Kumar

Music :RD Burman

It was a song about two very much in love couple not caring about the world, about conventions and making out in public. It bubbled with teen spirit and made you believe in unchained love.

Jeevan ke har mod pe mil jayenge

Film : Jhoota Kahin Ka (1979)

Singers : Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhosle

Music: RD Burman

Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh relive their romance in this duet. It’s a song about finding that right person and both Asha and Kishore brought that out impeccably.

Taki o taki

Film : Himmatwala (1983)

Singers : Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhosle

Music : Bappi Lahiri

A robust number where Jeetendra and Sridevi do all kinds of calisthenics. You needed singers who have a lively sense of humour to pull it off and thankfully Asha and Kishore both possessed that amply.

Aaj rapat jaayen to

Film: Namak Halaal (1982)

Singers : Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhosle

Music : Bappi Lahiri

It’s one of the raunchiest rain songs ever without crossing the bounds of decency and listening to it, one can gauge that both Asha and Kishore had lots of fun singing it. Amitabh Bachchan and Smita Patil were at their steamy best on screen.

Inteha ho gai

Film : Sharaabi (1984)

Singers: Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhosle

Music : Bappi Lahiri

This rock ghazal could only be conceived by Bappi da. It takes off from anxiety and separation to the meeting of lovers and trust Asha and Kishore to elevate the song with their meticulous rendering.
