Iru Mugan movie review: Chiyaan Vikram's LOVE avatar is the only saving grace of this average actioner!

So, there was a lot of buzz around Iru Mugan ever since its trailer was out, because fans were getting to witness Chiyaan Vikram in a never seen before double role! He was set to play, Akhilan the RAW agent and LOVE, a dangerous criminal who was also possibly gay. To see Vikram pull off such diverse roles, was one of the main reasons for the excitement around the film. When Research and Analysis wing (RAW) finds out, LOVE is responsible for the attack on the Indian Embassy, they bring on board an ex-agent Akhilan, who is the only one who has dealt with this dangerous criminal in the past. LOVE exports a drug called speed, that when inhaled, increases your adrenaline rush 10 fold, because of which you can attack anybody. The new of this drug spreads across terrorist groups who believe it can be useful for their attacks. LOVE is involved in exporting these drugs to these terrorist organisations. Accompanying Akhilan on this mission to hunt down LOVE again is trainee Ayushi (played by Nithya Menen) In the past, when Vikram tracked down LOVE and destroyed his plan and him, he lost his wife Meera ( played by Nayanthara) who was shot by one of his men. So there's one nagging question on Akhilan's mind-If he had killed LOVE in the past, who was this mastermind?

What's hot

Chiyaan as LOVE is suave, stylish and at total ease with himself. His effeminate mannerisms add a layer to this criminal character. His thorough knowledge on drugs along with his noticeable sense of style, make him the most interesting character in the movie. Since the veteran actor is playing a double role, his versatility comes across as he pulls off two different characters. There are momentary twists, that you would have not seen coming. And the background score by Harris Jayaraj is in sync with what's happening in the story. Muthaiah, a sincere yet comical police officer played by Thambi Ramaiah does his part for the movie and gives us a few laughs.

What's not

Anand Shankar as a director and scriptwriter has been a let down. There are so many scenes that could have been edited, and dialogues even more. There was this one particular scene where Akhilan and Meera are being chased by the police. Amidst all that chaos, Meera challenges his Akilan's driving skills. And bam! He starts to drive like a mad man proving her wrong. He then turns to Meera and says,"You husband is hot right," and she has this silly smile on her face. Seriously, what was that?! The suspense that surprised you at the interval ends in 5 minutes or less after the movie resumes. And then the story has been dragged for way too long and for no reason. Even the face to face scenes between Akhilan and LOVE don't call for cheering. To add to all this, the plot begins with too much information which dampens your excitement. Because you feel like you know everything even before the story has unraveled. Moving on to the actors, Chiyaan as the ruthless RAW agent is so said and done. His motto evidently is--Punch, beat, thrash, you will get what you need. After one or two scenes, it appears repetitive with no strategy involved. Nithya Menen might as well have been played by a nobody because, you would even forget she was in the movie. Wait, was she even there? You have to give it off to Nayanthara for looking super hot, but that's it. Show's over. The glamour quotient is high without a doubt, while the other elements take a deep dip.

What to do

If at all you are too curious to know how Vikram's role as LOVE the criminal pans out then you could give it a try. Otherwise, giving this actioner a miss would not be the worst decision. No whistles or anything.
