‘Underworld: Blood Wars’ Trailer Teases Kate Beckinsale’s Blood-Thirsty Return [Video]

The first teaser for the much-anticipated Underworld: Blood Wars has just been dropped and fans of the franchise will be thrilled to see that Kate Beckinsale reprises her role as Selene. Not only is Kate’s iconic vampire the focal point of this first teaser, but she seems to be all business in a story arc that appears to have deviated from the lycan/vampire story arc, which originally introduced the character of Michael Corvin (Scott Speedman). Instead, Underworld: Blood Wars focuses on the feud between the clans with Beckinsale’s Selene drawn into the center of the conflict.

Underworld: Blood Wars Teases “More Blood Will Be Spilled Than Ever Before”

Once again, Kate Beckinsale reminds us in her voice-over that the vampires and lycans have been at war for hundreds of years and it may certainly seem like it has been that long for dedicated Underworld fans, because, as Entertainment Weekly reminds us, Ms. Beckinsale hasn’t reprised Selene since 2012’s Underworld: Awakening. Six years away from the franchise certainly hasn’t dulled Beckinsale’s bite, as her agile vampire alter ego proves in this teaser for Underworld: Blood Wars.

Joined by Thomas (Charles Dance) and his son David (Theo James), Selene hopes to bring an end to the centuries-long feud, fighting her natural instincts to kill the lycans as well as fighting the mistrust of those that still expect betrayal from her. Meanwhile, the lycans are in pursuit of the Beckinsale character for their own purposes. Echoing the story of the first film in the series, this new lycan clan hopes to reinvigorate their line and make them invincible to the vampires through the introduction of Selene’s blood into that of their own.

It seems some form of transformation does take place at some point in Underworld: Blood Wars, because Selene appears resurrected with streaks of blonde in her hair. The synopsis of this new Underworld film suggests we may see Selene die and somehow return, or may see her otherwise transformed, but, in either case, the Kate Beckinsale character will suffer some sacrifice. Will the price paid be enough to bring peace to the clans of immortals?

Kate Beckinsale Teases A Twilight Flashback With Ex-Husband Michael Sheen

Although Michael Sheen won’t be returning to Underworld: Blood Wars as Lucien, Daily Mail points out that his previous role in the Twilight franchise as Aro became a source of amusement for Ms. Beckinsale, Michael, and their 17-year-old daughter Lily. All in good humor, Lily revealed in a text message to her divorced parents that she had recently taken a Twilight-themed quiz, entitled “Who is Your Volturi Baby Daddy” and had gotten Aro. As Twilight fans know, Aro is the character played by Sheen.

“That is both incredibly disturbing and rather reassuring at the same time,” Michael texted back in the family’s group chat.

“I don’t want u to be my baby daddy. I wanted Caius,” Lily texted in reply.

“I don’t want you to be mine either,” responded Ms. Beckinsale.

“Too bloody late,” Sheen came back at Kate’s comment.

“Godd****t,” responded the Underworld: Blood Wars actress.

While there have been rumors that Beckinsale, daughter Lily, and Michael Sheen had been going through some strife, Kate recently spoke openly about their family dynamic. While her words may suggest they have been through their share of family drama, Beckinsale also seems confident in saying that they all have come together recently.

“We get on really well. I mean, I love Sarah. I’d love her if she didn’t have anything to do with Michael,” Beckinsale said. “I’m just glad Michael found her.”

Underworld: Blood Wars, starring Kate Beckinsale, Lara Pulver, and Theo James, opens on January 6, 2017, in theaters.
