PIMPRI CHINCHWAD: An agitated young female elephant of a circus went berserk on Wednesday morning, triggering panic for two hours in Bhosari.
The mahout was taking the elephant for a bath to a nearby pond in the morning when she lost her cool seeing a large gathering there. No one was injured.
Satish Gore, the veterinary officer of Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) told TOI, "A circus company had put up tents on the open village ground opposite PCMC's Ankushrao Landge auditorium in Bhosari a few days ago.
Barring the elephant and her mahout, the entire circus team has shifted to another city for shows. The circus company did not have the permission for transporting the elephant to another place and so she and her mahout were still at Bhosari."
One of the legs of the elephant was tied with a rope when she was taken for a bath. As she got agitated seeing the crowd, the mahout got busy in shooing away people. In the meantime, the elephant started running and the mahout could not cling on to the rope. "We received information about the incident around 10.45am and brought the elephant under control around 12.35pm," Gore said.
Bhosari police station's senior inspector Ganesh More said, "A large gathering at the ground in Bhosari agitated the elephant and she roamed around creating panic among the assembled people. Around 10 to 15 policemen controlled the crowd and helped the mahout as well as PCMC officials to bring the elephant under control."
The female elephant, aged around 16 to 17 years is young, healthy and physically sound. "She isn't mad," said Gore.
Gore said, "We have asked the mahout to be careful while transporting the elephant after getting the transit pass from the forest department's head office in Nagpur. If need be, they should take the help of the forest department and PCMC."
