MADURAI: The rural police have arrested a 26-year-old man under various sections of the Indian Penal Code for threatening the duty doctor and a staff nurse of a primary health centre with a knife.
The incident took place in Alanganallur primary health centre on Monday. The death of a young man, despite the best available treatment provided to him, triggered the unruly situation.

The accused, S Kalidoss, son of Subbiah, was arrested on the same day and remanded before a judicial magistrate. Police have also booked 10 unnamed persons who involved in the ruckus.
The case was registered at Alanganallur Police Station based on a complaint from medical officer Dr Dhanasekaran.
Police said the deceased, identified as Tamilselvan, was killed in a road accident at Alanganallur Bus Terminal while he was riding on his 150CC motorcycle.
"The accident took place on Sunday. He was rushed to the PHC in an autorickshaw. A large number of his friends and relatives had thronged the hospital premises on Monday. Charging that the victim was not treated well, they created a ruckus at the PHC. Armed with knives, the miscreants threatened the hospital staff including the staff nurse and the duty doctor with dire consequences.

They forcefully locked up the hospital and destroyed a television and window glasses of the hospital," a police officer said.
Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu Government Doctors Association (TNGDA), Madurai, conducted an executive committee meeting on Tuesday and discussed the issue. It demanded the arrest of all those involved in the incident under the stringent Hospital Protection Act.
The association is planning to stage a protest in front of the Government Rajaji Hospital on Wednesday to highlight the issue.
It has also decided to convene an emergency general body meeting on the same day to discuss the future course of action.
