GANDHINAGAR: Congress has promised a constitutional amendment to provide reservation in education and jobs for Economically Backward Classes (EBCs) if it comes to power at the Centre.
Senior Congress leader Shankarsinh Vaghela, who is leader of opposition in Gujarat assembly, accused the BJP of misleading people as it is not serious about EBC reservations.

"The BJP knows that without a constitutional amendment by Parliament, the EBC quota is not possible," the Congress leader said.
"The BJP government of Gujarat knew that their EBC ordinance will not stand in a court of law. The high court has already rejected it. Now the state government also knows that the Supreme Court will also reject it. The BJP has cheated students and parents. It's now time for exams but admissions are still going on because of the Gujarat government's negligence," Vaghela said.
"Congress has already announced that it will introduce a constitutional amendment to allow EBC reservation at the national level and seek support of all the states. If the Modi government introduces an amendment for EBC reservations, the Congress will support them. If they don't do it, it will expose their real intentions," Vaghela said.
He further said that if the BJP doesn't introduce a constitutional amendment, the state unit of the Congress will request the party's national vice-president Rahul Gandhi to move a motion in Parliament demanding EBC quota from the Union government. "If the Modi government doesn't do it, the Congress will introduce the amendment when it returns to power at the Centre. We will convince all states of the need for an EBC quota," Vaghela said.
