Shet, Raghav, Fasal leading with 6.5 points; J&K player Meenal Gupta at top 10 tables

JAMMU, Sept 5: Over night leader Sonkalan Bharti of West Bengal lost the seventh round and was pushed back in the ongoing South Asian Amateur Chess Championship, being organized by All J&K Chess Association (AJKCA) and sponsored by J&K State Sports Council, here today.
After seventh round, Shet Prajwal P, Raghav Srivathsav V and Mohammed Fasal V U emerged joint leaders after scoring 6.5 points, while Arun Rathi, Jeet Jain, Mota Pankit, Ajith MP, Sayan Banik, Rishabh Nishad, Mohite Ranveer, Sonkalan Bharti, Suresh PK, Deepak Singh, Rupesh Ranjan and Anjana Krishna S were all at 6 points each.
Among J&K players, only Meenal Gupta was at top 10 tables with 5.5 points in the ongoing Championship, which is being played at Gurjar Desh Charitable Trust, Channi Himmat.
Field has become wide open now as three leading players are at same points. Among international players, there was no match against Indian players.
Fourteen professional Arbiters are working for smooth conduct of this event, while Srivatsan R has been appointed by Asian Chess Federation as Chief Arbiter.
Around 430 players and 200 coaches, managers and officials from 28 States of India are participating in the Championship. Players from Nepal and Bangladesh are also participating in this event. Around 45 J&K State players are also participating in the Competition.
According to Atul Kumar Gupta, President, All J&K Chess Association, cash prizes worth Rs 10 lakh will be distributed among the winners’ alongwith trophies and medals.
A total of 9 rounds under Swiss System will be played in this first ever mega international event in J&K. This event will provide a big platform to J&K State players to hone their talent.
Earlier, Taranvir Singh Gujral, Vice President, AJKCA inaugurated today’s round in presence of Atul Kumar Gupta, President AJKCA, Joint Secretary, All India Chess Federation, Ashiq Ahmad Kolu, General Secretary AJKCA, Baldev Raj, Vice President, Khalid Amin, Treasurer, Kuljeet Jamwal, Press Secretary, Vikas Nanda, Co-ordinator, Raj Kumar and Rakesh Gupta.
