JAMMU, Sept 5: Minister of State for Youth Services and Sports Sunil Kumar Sharma flagged-off a team of Mountaineering Association of J&K for mountaineering expedition to Matho Kangri Peak (20439ft) in Ladakh from KL Saigal Hall, here today.
The 9 member team comprising 7 men and two women will be led by celebrated mountaineer Everester Ram Singh Slathia. The other members are Everester Sajad Haider, Dorjey, Sonam Sidharth, Manik Slathia, Shashikant Sharma, Shawetica Khajuria, Ambreen Fatma and Ram Khajuria.
Situated towards the south bank of river Indus near Leh the 6230m (20439ft) high Matho Kangri is a formidable peak which was first climbed by a Japanese team. However, an Indian team also climbed it in 1989. Mountaineering Association of J&K plans to unfurl the National Flag on the peak in the third week of September, 2016. The very well balanced team of some experienced and budding mountaineers are expected to place all the members of the team including two girls, on the peak.
Ram Khajuria, General Secretary of Mountaineering Association of J&K gave a brief account of the activities undertaken by the Association since its inception.
Speaking on the occasion, Minister Sunil Sharma promised all possible help from the Government and wished the team a great success.
He also distributed medals to the winners and certificates of the State Sport Climbing Championship held recently.
Prominent among others present on the occasion included Prof Lalit Magotra, an eminent scientist and Advisor of Tawi Trekkers J&K, Zorawar Singh Jamwal, Secretary General Press Club Jammu, Rajan Sharma, Divisional Sports Officer (J), Arti Sharma, Director, Sprawling Buds School, Yogeshwar Kumar, Vice President, Shawetica Khajuria, Joint Secretary, Sushil Singh, Treasurer of Mountaineering Association of J&K, Rakesh Goswami, Shakti Singh, Navneet Gupta and RBS Jamwal, Founder Member of Tawi Trekkers J&K.
