Madhes front for withdrawal of cases

Raxaul: The United Democratic Madhes Front (UDMF) has demanded withdrawal of criminal cases lodged against the protesters by police during the recent Madhes movement.
A delegation of UDMF met the joint secretary, home affairs, Krishna Bahadur Mahara on Monday and narrated the details of 491 persons who are facing criminal cases in terai districts, urging the ministry to withdraw the cases.

Earlier, minister for home affairs and deputy PM Bimlendra Nidhi has assured the UDMF that cases against front activists would be withdrawn. UDMF leader Ram Naresh Ray said they were assured by the government in August that cases which are yet to reach the courts will be soon withdrawn, while it might take some time to withdraw those which are sub judice.
A senior lawyer of Nepal Supreme Court Dipendra Jha told TOI that the court has set some benchmarks where the government will have to complete certain procedures before withdrawing cases.
The government can withdraw public offence cases without much hassle but as far as serious offences like murder is concerned, the government has to take the permission of attorney general.
The UDMF has also urged to reimburse the medicare cost of those who were seriously injured in police firing and lathicharge during the Madhes movement.
"Although the government has provided funds for treatment, more money is needed," said a UDMF leader.
The UDMF has once again urged to give martyrdom status to 16 more people including one Ashish Ram of Raxaul who was killed in a police firing at Birgunj during the movement. The Nepal government till date has declared 52 Nepalese as martyrs, who were killed during the Madhes movement.
