Road blockade against hit-and-run case

September 05, 2016 12:00 am | Updated September 22, 2016 05:19 pm IST - RAMESWARAM:

Traffic on the National Highway at Thangachimadam near here was disrupted for about an hour when local people staged a road blockade in protest against a ‘hit and run’ case involving Rameswaram Deputy Superintendent of Police.

Darwin (48), a fisherman from Thangachimadam, was on his way to Pamban on a two-wheeler for fishing around 6 a.m. when the DSP vehicle, coming in the opposite direction, hit him. Even as the fisherman, who fell on the road, was crying for help, the DSP, Muthuramalingam, who was travelling in the vehicle, proceeded without stopping the vehicle, eye witnesses said.

After reporting the incident at Thangachimadam police station, the DSP proceeded to Rameswaram. The agitated local people blocked traffic on the National Highway, demanding action against the police officer. After senior officials promised action, they dispersed.

Later in the evening, the Thangachimadam police registered a FIR against Ghani, the DSP’s driver, police said. The fisherman, who suffered fracture in the leg, was admitted to the Government Hospital in Rameswaram.
