21-year-old Shreyansh Amol Navalkar, a resident of Girgaon, who is a student and works as an intern in an anchoring company and 26-year-old private firm employee Dadar resident Manish Ramesh Shah were both part of a WhatsApp group that would indulge in vulgar chats and jokes. Apparently Navalkar would often tease and abuse Shah on many occasions following which the former was removed from the group.

According to police sourices, Navalkar was unhappy about the snub and once when in the company of a common friend of both him and Shah he indulged in an verbally abusive argument with the latter on his friend's phone when he called, since he blamed him for his removal from the WhatsApp group. Shah then asked about Navalkar's whereabouts, which was the Naaz Compound of the Girgaon court with a knife. He then used the weapon to attack Navalkar. A lawyer saw the scuffle and reported the  matter to the police.

Police inspector Rajendra Patil of D B marg police station said, "Navalkar was rushed to Harkishan Das Hospital, he survived with an injury. We have arrested Shah and he is booked under section 326 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons) of IPC."
