BAHAWALPUR: Additional SP Ghulam Murtaza said on Saturday that 333 wanted men had been arrested by Bahawalpur police in August.

Talking to newsmen, he said Bahawalpur police had improved its performance over the past month.

“The inspector general of police had issued directives last month to speed up the crackdown on wanted criminals in the district,” he said.

“Policemen who have participated in this drive should be lauded for their role,” he said.

He said Naushera Jadeed and Channi Goth police stations had the best performance in this regard.

“They arrested 44 wanted criminals in category A (heinous crimes) and 289 in category B (petty crimes),” he said.

Rescue exercise

Rescue 1122 conducted a drill at Ghazi Ghat bridge near Indus River on Saturday.

Talking to newsmen, District Emergency Officer Dr Natiq said the exercise had been organised conducted to check a tracking system. He said seven boats and 50 Rescue 1122 workers participated in the drill.

“We were able to check their response time in case of floods,” he said. “Rescuers also had a chance to test their training.”

He said that presence of staffers and boats would be monitored through a tracking system.

“Floods are being forecast till September 15,” he said. “We must remain vigilant and be ready to cope with any emergency.”

Members of the cabinet committee for floods monitored the exercise via video link from Lahore.
