Calangute to get 8 high-mast lamps: Panch

CALANGUTE: The village panchayat of Calangute has decided to install eight new high-mast lamps at important traffic junctions within its jurisdiction. Each lamp will cost 8 lakh. Panch Joseph Sequeira said the entire expenditure will be borne by the panchayat.
Many areas in the coastal tourism hub are enveloped in darkness after nightfall, rendering the movement of tourists and locals risky at night.A large number of anti-social elements, such as bag-snatchers, pimps and drug peddlers also float around the area after twilight, sources said. Locals have urged the erection of high-mast lamps for a long time now, as they feel that these will act as a deterrent.
Some villagers have also complained that the high-mast lamp in the vicinity of the Calangute beach has been non-functional for the last few months, providing tourists an opportunity to drink alcohol and litter the area.
