Thiruvananthapuram: The first Manavikatha award instituted by Kerala Secular Cultural Forum will be conferred on writer M Sukumaran. The award consists of Rs 50,000 and citation.
The award committee chaired by writer Zakaria also consists of K C Narayanan, Pradeep Panangad and K Abdul Gafoor. The jury inferred that works of M Sukumaran who has been part of Malayalam literature for more than half-a-century now, does justice to time, history and the political sphere of the state.
He did not to compromise with power and ensured that high moral standards are maintained in his writings.
The award will be presented to him on September 3, at the press club here. Sukumaran has been an integral part of Malayalam short story writing since 1960's. He was an employee of accountant general's office in the capital and his active participation in trade union stikes resulted in him being dismissed from service in 1973.
His novel Seshakriya portrayed the political decadence of leftist organizations and was widely discussed.
