Sreeram Chaulia -- Modi powers a new India-U.S. partnership

Are India and the United States becoming de facto allies? Although shy of a formal alliance, the world's two largest democracies are displaying greater trust and coordination than ever before due to a change in mindset in New Delhi under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who wants to position India as a "leading power" by shedding a hesitant and overcautious foreign policy.

The signing of a landmark defense deal, the Logistics Exchange Memorandum of Agreement, between India and the U.S. on Aug. 29 in Washington is the latest sign of Modi's will to enter into mutually beneficial strategic arrangements with friendly great powers.
