We found the girl beautiful, arrested couple tells cops
The railway police on Wednesday arrested a couple from Panvel on the charge of stealing a 2-year-old baby girl from CST. Vijay Baswant and Supriya – parents to a boy and a girl – are yet to give a convincing reply as to why they committed the crime.

“We found the girl beautiful,” the couple has told the police. Baswant, 25, and Supriya, 21, are labourers at a construction site and live in a shanty at Wadghar village. The case came to light when Andheri resident Vashra Dhawase approached the railway cops on August 26 saying her daughter Vasihanavi had been stolen from CST. She said she was waiting to board a long-distance train and had dozed off when the baby went missing.

A team of Government Railway Police led by Inspector Santosh Dhanwate and a special task force got the first lead after CCTV footage showed a couple with the child hailing a cab at CST. They tracked down the taxi driver, who said he had dropped them at Masjid. Closed-circuit cameras at the station showed the couple boarding a Khopoli-bound train.
After scanning CCTV recordings at all stations between Masjid and Khopoli, it was clear that the kidnappers got down at Dadar. The chase took the cops to Wadala and eventually to Panvel. The team then got in touch with the Panvel police and began approaching locals with a picture of the couple, who were finally identified by an auto driver. Dhanwate said Baswant and Supriya were arrested on Wednesday.

DCP Rupali Ambure said, “We are still to ascertain as to why the couple ran away with the kid. They said they found her beautiful.” But the cops are not ready to buy this argument.
Baswant and Supriya, who hails from Gadchiroli district, has a house in Raigad and the two recently came to Panvel in search of work, said the police.
