The search for a discreet yet long-lasting facial suncare option knows no season.  Formulas that feature chemical filters like avobenzone, octinoxate and homosalate tend to deliver the most transparent finish, but lose their effectiveness after two hours and need reapplication.  The key to the best coverage is layering throughout the day.  Says Dr. Elizabeth Tanzi, Assistant Clinical Professor, Department of Dermatology at George Washington University Medical Center,

“I like a moisturizer with SPF or a BB cream in the daytime and then a little mineral powder, that is a sunscreen too, like ColorScience Sunforgettable Sunscreen Brush, applied throughout the day. That’s what I do for myself.”

Not keen on the matte finish of powders? A new breed of sunscreen, facial spf sprays, is designed to make layering and reapplying a breeze. Their hydrating formulas are just the thing for these last days of summer, and will remain useful against the drying winter winds to come. Here are the crop of tried and tested favorites. To make these formulas water-soluble, chemical filters do need to be used, but be rest assured of their safety. Says Dr. Tanzi,

“Although there is a lot of concern on the internet about the safety of avobenzone as an endocrine disruptor, this has never been proven to be an issue in regular use. I think they (chemical filters) are all safe when used as directed.”

Bioderma Hydrabio Moisurizing Anti-UV Mist SPF 30, $16 (pictured above): This brand has earned a cult following particularly among sensitive skin types for its ultra-gentle cleansing water Bioderma Crealine. Currently only available in Europe (or European beauty sites), the company claims Bioderma Hydrarabio SPF 30 is the first protective water mist on the market, and it truly goes on as lightly as a spritz of Evian. Glycerin features prominently on the ingredient list which gives the formula ultra-hydrating benefits. Beauty editors are snapping this one up while overseas on press trips, as the 50 ml size is perfectly portable.  Its US debut can’t come soon enough.
