SHAHJAHANPUR (UP): A tigress in Lakhimpur Kheri, suspected to be a maneater, claimed its fifth human victim on Tuesday in Chedipur village of Mailani range of south Kheri forest. Ever since the big cat killed two persons here within 24 hours on August 22, officials from the forest department, World Wildlife Fund (WWF), Wildlife Trust of India (WTI) and Lucknow Zoo have been stationed in the village trying unsuccessfully to capture the animal.
Villagers allege that none of over 50-odd officials helped them when the tigress attacked 50-year-old Janaki Prasad who was working in his fields on Tuesday.
According to eyewitnesses, the big cat dragged his body into a nearby sugarcane field and had eaten some portion of it by the time they retrieved it.
