Porsche To Offer Electric Versions Of Its Upcoming Cayenne Coupe

A Porsche Cayenne Coupe has been spotted undergoing tests in Zuffenhausen which makes for an interesting revelation. The test mule spotted - the credit for which bestows on CarMagazine - has the body of a Panamera while riding on top of an SUV set up.

That there is already a distinct and flourishing SUV segment with stopping rear end should also be reason enough for Porsche to field a model here. The 'coupe-fied' SUVs that have the body of a coupe while offering the driving characteristics of a SUV as exemplified by the likes of the Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe or the BMW X6 is what Porsche is aiming at with the new prototype, experts opined.

In another revelation, the test mule spotted has been found to have the rear end riding really low, to the point that it has made the vehicle look ungainly when viewed in the entirety. This again has led experts to believe that the German manufacturer is contemplating electric propulsion for the SUV when ready.

This again is in line with the growing trend among car makers to launch all-electric versions of SUVs that otherwise has come to earn the dubious record of being gas guzzlers. With the Tesla Model X changing all that, other manufacturers have only made it a priority to have electric driven SUVs as part of their fleet.

Mercedes is known to be working on an all-electric SUV that would be based on the GLC while Jaguar too is developing electric driven SUV. An Audi E-Tron with the body shape of a crossover is also expected within the new few years.

In fact, the trend to launch electric driven SUV, either in its pure state or hybrid form is also evident in the higher echelons of the segment. For instance, there is the Rolls Royce Cullinan that is touted to have a plug-in hybrid version as well. Similarly, Bentley too is believed to be considering a hybrid or all-electric version of the segment leader Bentayga in future.

With that being the state of affairs in the SUV segment, on the whole, it perhaps would be safe to predict Porsche's upcoming SUV to include electric in its power equations. That said, there is no word yet as to when will be the earliest the said prototype would be heading for the production lines.
