Karan Johar can't be subtle, he doesn't know how to think small. Even his shortfilm in Bombay Talkies, had the visual splendour none of the other shortfilms did. He likes to make movies about the rich, with pretty sets, and the most good-looking actors in the business. To an extent, Johar can also be called a vain filmmaker, and he doesn't deny it.

However, no one uses scale to his advantage like Karan Johar does. Being an excellent writer, Johar comes up with iconic lines which are mouthed by a baritoned Amitabh Bachchan, or an overwhelmed Ranbir Kapoor in the setting of heavy thundering. He doesn't hold back trying to exploit the drama in a scene, which is why the thundering score in the background riles up the scene. Subtlety has never been Johar's strongest quality, however, his stories do make us emotional in more ways than one. Here are 5 reasons why Ae Dil Hai Mushkil is probably the most Karan Johar film you have seen in the last decade.

1. Multi-star cast

Karan Johar is quite the social butterfly, and he is friends with the biggest Bollywood stars. He's always got Shah Rukh Khan, his closest actor friend to star in a majority of his films. And even recently when he's chosen to work with newcomers, he's made massive stars out of them. Ae Dil Hai Mushkil has one of the most interesting pairings in Ranbir Kapoor and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, while Anushka Sharma and Fawad Khan play significant characters too. Therefore, a very intriguing quartet.

2. Amazing melody
One of the things that really grabs your attention in the teaser is Arijit Singh's grungy vocals to the title track with heavy western orchestration. Johar has always had amazing music, right from Jatin-Lalit for the first two films, then Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, Vishal-Shekhar and now hit-guarantor Pritam. The title song has a slow-burning passion, which grows on you the more you listen to it.

3. Foreign locales
Johar is known to base his films in cities outside India, for the aesthetic sense that the film looks prettier in London, New York rather than plain old Mumbai. In Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, the crew has reportedly shot in London, Paris, Vienna and back home in Rajasthan. The last mini-schedule for an elevator sequence was filmed in Mumbai.

4. Passionate love story
Johar has been known to make passionate love stories, where the hero goes against the entire world for the love of his life. And at the centre of Ae Dil Hai Muskhil you see a messed-up love stories between the characters of Ranbir Kapoor, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Anushka Sharma and Fawad Khan.

5. Iconic dialogue
Remember Pyaar Dosti Hai from Kuch Kuch Hota Hai? Or Zindagi mein agar kuch banna ho, kuch haasil karna ho... from Kabhie Khushi Kabhie Gham? Johar comes up with gems once in a while. And he's revealed at least one of them in Ae Dil Hai Mushkil's teaser where Ranbir Kapoor says 'Ek tarfaa pyaar ki taakat hi kuch aur hoti hai, yeh do logon mein nahi bat-ti. Ispe sirf mera haq hai." (There's nothing more powerful then unrequited love, it isn't divided between two people. It belongs only to me.)
