MU academic calendar likely to go for a toss
Gaya: As per the Magadh University academic calendar announced on January 8 this year, admission process for Degree part II and III courses should have been completed by June 30. But it is unlikely to begin in near future and the much publicized calendar seems to go for a toss.
Degree part II exams of the university, that began on August 9, had to be suspended midway on account of flood situation prevailing in several districts, particularly Patna.
Gaya, otherwise infamous for droughts on account of the region falling in what Geographers call rain shadow zone, witnessed two spells of flash floods in Falgu, Morhar and some other rivers crossing the district.
Besides rain, prolonged stir by the non-teaching employees and frequent changes of controller of exams, a virtual game of musical chairs in the examination department of the university also created a mess causing delay in the conduct of exams and publication of result. Earlier, anomalies in the publication of Degree part III results also caused campus unrest and the examination department was mostly busy in result correction.
In the last few months, the university has got three controllers of exams in quick succession. Sushil Kumar Singh was replaced by Md Israil Khan. Soon thereafter, Khan was replaced by NK Yadav. Whereas, Degree part II exams had to be suspended midway due to floods, the part I exam is yet to begin.
If that was not enough, the examination department was rocked by scandals, including the degree scam in which several hundred foreigners were awarded PhD degrees in an allegedly fraudulent manner.
The scam is being inquired into by the vigilance bureau of the state and on account of involvement of foreigners, the inquiry officer has also sought information from the immigration officials to ascertain the veracity of the allegation that the recipients were either awarded degrees without even visiting India or the degree recipients came on temporary tourist visa and not on the student visa mandated for foreign students.
Asked about the non-observance of the academic calendar, College Development Council coordinator Upendra Verma said the controller of examination was the right person to explain the delay. Controller of exams N K Yadav attributed the delay in conducting the exams and resultant thwarting of the academic calendar to extraneous reasons, including the compulsion of conducting exams of Bihar Public Service Commission.
