City Govindas ready to go for Dahi Handi on the campus premises
Amidst the chants of Haathi Godha Palki, Jai Kanhaiyalal ki’, the campus Govindas and Gopis will participate in Dahi Handi celebrations with great ardour today. We bring you a glimpse of how various city colleges celebrate this festival, which is all about plenty of exuberance, colours, cheer and more...
One for the tradition
This is the seventh year of SB Jain College’s Dahi Handi celebrations and this time it is being organised in a grand manner.
There are nine teams participating this year. A faculty member and co-ordinator of the event, Nicky Bellani shared, “With the DJ playing in the background, the participants plan to form large pyramids and attempt to break the handi. Other students and faculty members will also be present to cheer for them. This event has become a tradition of sorts for us and we make sure faculty members are there to not only check that the decorum is maintained but also to explain the preventive measures so that nobody gets hurt.”
Gopis take the lead
At Rajshree Mulak College of Engineering, daredevil gopis take the lead at Dahi Handi ritual. A faculty member Rahul Burange said, “Girls started practising almost a week ago. We abide by all the guidelines given by the Supreme Court pertaining to Dahi-Handi celebration. We have an ambulance ready on the campus, in case of emergency. Teacher in-charge of NIT, Vaibhav Tumane adds, “Girls give a tough competition to boys. Adding dash of entertainment, we have also organised a fashion show and cultural act in the afternoon.”
Team-building endeavour
Students of Shrimati Manoramabai Mundle College of Architecture, also participate with great zeal. In fact, students organise the entire event all by themselves. Faculty in-charge of the event Atula Patwardhan said, “We guide students wherever they need help. This event is a great team building exercise. Also, such activities help them brush up their management skills as students run from pillar to post to fulfil the responsibilities delegated to them. We try and celebrate almost all the festivals on our campus to nurture the feeling of oneness.”
