22 kids go to school in these ruins
Jaipur: In the Khanda Sahrol gram panchayat of Shahbad block, Baran district, 22 children are enrolled at the government primary school in Devri Upreti. The school building, however, looks like it might collapse on the kids any moment.
Ramto Bai, a resident of the village, said the building had developed cracks many years ago, but no timely repairs were done.
In the rains this year, one wall collapsed. Even more cracks have developed now, she said.
Despite how precariously the building stands, the school continues to function. Although officials have been informed of the poor state of the school building, no repair work has yet been undertaken. The village in which this building stands has 18 families belonging to the Bhil community. There are no residents from other groups in this village. The toilet in the school premises looks like an ancient ruin. Schoolchildren have long stopped using it.
Ramto Bai said villagers have instructed the schoolteacher to conduct classes in the open rather than risk having kids sitting within the school building.
There are students from the village who, after finishing primary school here, have gone on to pursue higher studies elsewhere. Some students have even begun to attend college.
Education officer Prasadilal of Shahbad block said, "We have requested authorities to conduct the necessary repairs. As soon as funds are made available through the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, repair work will begin."
