BookWorm: Hamish Daud Wyllie: Learning from books and adventures

BookWorm: Hamish Daud Wyllie: Learning from books and adventures

H

amish Daud Wyllie is the kind of guy who would rather be on the road than at home with a book in his hand, but that doesn’t mean that he doesn’t have a nice collection of books at home.

“I have a lot of books at home, but I usually pick up books that I want to learn from,” he said.

For the Australian-born actor and TV host, learning doesn’t come only from school, but rather from experiences.

“I have my degrees and diplomas from college, but at the end of the day you learn more from the things you read and from personal experiences more than anything.”

It’s no wonder the actor likes to always keep himself busy. Aside from hosting and acting, he runs an architectural firm in Yogyakarta, and is greatly involved in conservation projects across the country.

“I want to do a lot of cool things with my life. I don’t want to be just another boring public figure. I do a lot of conservation work, I’m part of the WWF’s Racing Extinction Project and I’m also currently doing an exhibition called Indonesian Ocean Pride,” he said.

For the exhibition, Hamish swims with sharks, without any equipment. He says getting up close and personal with sharks is a way to show people how harmless these animals are.

“I want to focus on the positive interaction between humans and animals. These shots that I’m taking can hopefully be used by people to understand that animals are harmless, so why do we have to kill them?”

While Hamish is currently busy shooting his second movie of the year, Trinity: the Nekad Traveller (Trinity: the Reckless Traveler), here are his current favorite reads when he has the time to sit down and relax.

The Fountainhead
By Ayn Rand

I like Howard Roark, the main character in this book, for his idealism and individualism.

Old Dutch encyclopedia

I read an old Dutch encyclopedia that talks about Indonesia because I want to compare the different perspectives and how different Indonesia is in their eyes.
