By JAMES KUNDA –
THE United Church of Zambia (UCZ) has condemned the destruction of public property in some parts of the country by political party cadres who are aggrieved that their preferred candidates lost this month’s general elections.
UCZ general secretary Peggy Kabonde has since hailed President-elect Edgar Lungu who had championed peace in line with the country’s ‘One Zambia One Nation’ slogan.
“The post-election misconduct and destruction of public property in some parts of the country is worrying and should not be allowed to continue.
“We should not accommodate such havoc because our country is known as a beacon of peace and unity,” Dr Kabonde said.
She was speaking in Lusaka yesterday during the reception service for the election of Sydney Sichilima as the Synod Bishop of the UCZ.
The service, which was held at UCZ St Andrews Congregation in Woodlands, was graced by President-elect Lungu, who was invited as the guest of honour.
Dr Kabonde said Mr Lungu had exhibited true leadership by championing peace in the political arena.
“We commend you Your Excellency for continuously providing leadership in the call for peace and unity.
“We also congratulate you on your re-election and pray for your good health as you continue to preside over the affairs of the country and seek for the people to live in harmony and witness continued national development,” Dr Kabonde said.
She said the Church was happy with the voter turnout, but that the Government should re-visit the failure of the referendum on the Bill of Rights.
Dr Kabonde said the Bill of Rights was an important document which should not be abandoned because it contained the interests of every Zambian.
She said the Church would continue supporting and working with the Government of the day in the quest to enable the country to achieve development.
