Sixteen-year-old Mallamma, who shot to fame by holding a satyagraha, to get a toilet built in her house in Koppal district on Sunday came in for praise by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In his Mann Ki Baat programme, Mr. Modi referred to the SSLC student’s fight and determination to get a toilet for her poor family. Pointing out that finally the village panchayat chairman arranged Rs. 18,000 to provide a toilet to her family which did not have financial strength to raise resources, Mr. Modi hailed her “grit” and said: “this is the people’s power”. “I am thrilled and proud that the Prime Minister mentioned my name and that of my village in his speech,” Ms. Mallamma, said.
