Patna: With three more deaths reported from Samastipur district on Sunday, the toll caused by the Ganga floods has mounted to 58 in the state. Overall, the floods caused by various rivers this monsoon have claimed 160 lives in Bihar till Sunday. The Ganga floods have so far claimed 15 lives in Bhojpur, 11 in Samastipur, nine in Begusarai, seven in Vaishali, five in Saran, three each in Lakhisarai and Khagaria, two in Bhagalpur and one each in Buxar, Patna and Munger districts.
While CM Nitish Kumar undertook an aerial survey of Bhagalpur and Purnia districts, RJD chief Lalu Prasad and his minister son Tejashwi Prasad Yadav took stock of the situation in Buxar and its adjoining districts. The CM visited the relief camps and interacted with the displaced people at Sabour, Khankitta, T N B Collegiate and Evening College in and around Bhagalpur town, as well as at Narga and Mahashay Dyodhi at Champanagar-Nathnagar on the outskirts of Bhagalpur.
Later, he directed the divisional commissioner, DIG, DM and SSP of Bhagalpur to ensure that each of those living at the relief camps is provided utensils (plate, glass and bowl) and minimum of clothes (within a limit of Rs 600 per person). The CM also asked the district and divisional officials to make expeditious and efficient handling of the relief distribution work and said the displaced persons and their cattle had to be kept separately. Proper feed other than 'puaal (dry haystacks) were to be given to the cattle. The CM would visit Katihar on Monday.
Water resources department minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh alias Lalan Singh, chief secretary Anjani Kumar Singh, disaster management department principal secretary Vyasji, principal secretary to CM Chanchal Kumar and health secretary Jitendra Srivastava accompanied the CM.
The disaster management department (DMD) said the DMs of the 12 flood-hit districts have been directed to run community kitchen on a high ground to supply cooked food to marooned people still trapped in far-flung villages.
Around 37.21 lakh people have been affected by the Ganga floods in 2,024 villages of 74 blocks. Overall, 598 relief camps have been set up for displaced people, apart from 158 cattle shelters, in the 12 districts.
A report said Munger civil surgeon Dr Shreenath suffered severe fracture on his leg at the Naugarhi relief camp after he slipped during the divisional commissioner's inspection of the relief camp there. Arrangements were being made to rush him to Delhi for treatment.
