Tewari says ban triple talaq, but Cong mum

New Delhi: Congress leader and lawyer Manish Tewari said the high court verdict allowing women inside the sanctum sanctorum of Haji Ali dargah should be followed by abolition of 'triple talaq', saying that it would go a long way towards empowering women of the minority community.
Tewari tweeted, "Bombay High Court decision allowing women inside Haji Ali is progressive.If trustees have any sense, they would not impugn it. Triple Talaq must also go!"
He clarified the tweet represents his personal view, and that he is appearing in Supreme Court for an intervenor in the 'triple talaq' case.
When asked, Congress did not offer any comment.The 'talaq' issue is politically sensitive as the provision has a strong support base among Muslims.
Interestingly, Congress did not make a substantive comment on the Haji Ali judgement on Friday.When asked, it stuck to the factual position that the court verdict was binding but could also be appealed against. tnn
