PIL against caste names for government schools, colleges

CHENNAI: A PIL has urged the Madras high court to order removal of caste names prefixed or suffixed into the names of government and government-aided educational institutions in Tamil Nadu.
When the PIL of S Saravanan came up for hearing before the first bench of Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice R Mahadevan, the authorities, however, said the government was in no way involved with the process of naming of aided colleges.
The government itself is not running any college under a particular caste/community name, they said.
In the case of caste/community names of private and unaided institutions, the government said: "Some aided private colleges are solely maintained by educational agencies of that college and most of them are minority institutions," said a counter-affidavit of the education department, adding, "As for the names of some aided minority colleges, it has been averred that as per the Tamil Nadu Private Colleges (Regulation) Act, 1976 and the rules framed thereunder, it is the educational agency/college committee which is competent to run the college." To this, counsel for the PIL-petitioner submitted a list of government schools which have caste names. After the special government pleader pointed out that the PIL had not even included the ministry concerned as a party, the judges said, "If the petitioner is of the view that these are all government schools, he may address a communication/representation to the relevant department of the state government."
With this the bench closed the PIL.
