Vinay Sharma back in Tihar

August 27, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 08:30 am IST - NEW DELHI:

Vinay Sharma, the convict in the December 16 gang-rape who allegedly attempted suicide two days ago, was moved back to Tihar jail from Deen Dayal Hospital on Friday. A case has been registered against him for the suicide bid, the police said.

Vinay had tried to commit suicide in jail by hanging himself from the iron grill in his cell. The bid was rendered unsuccessful by security staff.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Pushpendra Kumar said a case has been registered against under Section 309 (attempt to suicide) of the IPC at the Hari Nagar police station.

Officials at the jail said they have taken additional measures to beef up security and were also counselling the convict to prevent a repeat of Wednesday’s incident.

“Sharma was brought back around 5.15 p.m. and sent to the special security ward. Security personnel and jail staff will keep a vigil round-the-clock,” said a senior official.
