Port official gets 2-yr jail for taking bribe

Visakhapatnam: Special judge for CBI cases T Surya Rao on Friday sentenced Bankapalli Janardhana Rao, former head assistant in the traffic department of Visakhapatnam Port Trust, to two year rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 2,000 for demanding and accepting bribe.
According to a release, Janardhana Rao had demanded a bribe of Rs 6,000 and accepted Rs 2,000 as a first instalment for issuing licence to a contractor of VCS Enterprises for undertaking repairs to the ships arriving at the port.

The accused was caught red handed while demanding and accepting the remaining bribe amount of Rs 4,000 from the complainant. After holding a regular trial, the court convicted the accused for the offences punishable under sections 7 and 13(2) read with 13(1)(d) of the PC Act, 1988, and ordered that sentences imposed on the accused shall run concurrently.
