Bhubaneswar: Gajapati police on Thursday confirmed Parala king Gopinath Gajapati Narayan Deo was never kept in wrongful confinement inside the palace as alleged by some locals. Police also said no royal property was sold in the past decade.
The new twist in the police investigation debunked allegations that the palace manager Ananga Manjari Patra and her brother Sanjay, who was the royal scion's personal assistant, had kept Gajapati in confinement and tried to grab royal property.
The apparent baseless allegation had triggered a massive public outrage against Ananga, who a few days later allegedly committed suicide.
"During inquiry, we found the Maharaja was never kept in forceful confinement," said a Crime Branch (CB) officer. The officer's remark assumed significance as the king was always flanked by police personnel at his palace since January.
On December 29, 2015, the Gajapati had sought security cover as he felt threat to his life from a royal family member, palace sources said. "On January 4, we provided four armed security guards to him. The security guards are since attached to the palace," SP (Gajapati) Sushil Panigrahi told the mediapersons.
Another CB officer said they verified documents in the local tehsil office and found no transaction of royal property, involving Ananga or any of her siblings.
