Yankees, Girardi ‘freaked out’ after fan lands in dugout

SEATTLE — Austin Romine had a flashback to his minor league days when he saw a pair of legs dangling over the top of the dugout in the middle of the eighth inning during the Yankees’ 5-0 win over the Mariners on Wednesday.

“It reminded me of when teams had mascots, but I knew they didn’t do that here,” Romine said. “I didn’t know what it was.”

He soon found out, as a fan then attempted to jump onto the field, but landed instead on the stairs of the dugout. He was quickly apprehended by security and led off the field, looking dazed, to say the least.

“He looked messed up,” Romine said. “You never want to see anyone get hurt, but you can’t have someone coming into the dugout. We’re not ready for that. I thought the police officer who handled it did a great job.”

Joe Girardi admitted the stunt “kind of freaked me out.”

As for the state of the fan, Girardi said: “Let’s just say he shouldn’t have been doing anything.”
